Heart of the Highlands Trail System
Tucker County, WV
The Heart of the Highlands Trail System project, a new concept for trails in Tucker County, West Virginia, will connect the non-motorized, multi-use trail systems of five land management agencies into a comprehensive, landscape oriented, environmentally sustainable, multi-use trail system that is accessible to the public. These management agencies include Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Monongahela National Forest, Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley State Park, and Little Canaan Wildlife Management Area.
The proposed 23-mile Core Loop Trail connects about 12 miles of existing trails by building three proposed connecting trail segments: Splash Dam South Trail, Swinging Bridge to Cortland Trail, and Headwaters Trail. Other connections, such as the replacement of the Camp 70 bridge, will continue to link the Core Loop Trail of the Heart of the Highlands Trail System to partner trail systems and other regional trails.
